Last week, I've been hankering for coffee buns and I finally satiated my cravings when we went malling. I bought coffee buns from
Roti Mum and when we were on your way out, we chanced upon Dough Joe who were offering 50% off on their bread items so we picked out a few to try including their coffee bun. So breads on hand, I decided to compare the two.

Coffee buns from Dough Joe (left) and Roti Mum (right)
At first glance, both are more or less the same size. Dough Joe (DJ)'s bun has a darker coffee shade though (see above photo). When turned upside down, you could see that where the coffee icing on DJ's bun enveloped the bread itself, reminding me of icings on doughnuts. Roti Mum (RM)'s instead has a 'skirt' of coffee crust on the edge. I love nibbling those - tastes like crunchy coffee creme :)

Taking a peek at the bun bottoms :P

Inside Dough Joe's coffee bun
The coffee bun from Roti Mum had the more distinguishing coffee aroma. The smell of coffee wafts from the bun unlike DJ's from which I didn't smell much of the coffee. You wouldn't know that it's a coffee bun if not for the label.
DJ's is more 'siksik' - kinda like a small mamon and it tasted bland. It was nothing special, it was just like an ordinary bread with a dollop of coffee icing on top. It had this cream filling in the bun which I guess was coffee creme but there wasn't any hint of coffee at all when I tasted it. I may be wrong about the flavor of the filling though :)
Roti Mum's coffee bun is hollow inside but still I liked it better because the bread is really flavorful with the buttered core and the coffee smell is addicting.
So for this round, Roti Mum's coffee bun won hands down. I've read that
Kopi Roti's coffee bun is also good. Will probably try it sometime :)
